THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE: Utah lawmakers approve gun safety training for students
"Utah lawmakers on Thursday approved the creation of a pilot program to provide basic gun safety training to students.
The program, optional for school districts and students, would instruct eighth-grade children on what to do if they find a gun, particularly to not pick it up and to alert an adult.
Riverton Republican Rep. Daniel McCay, the bill's House sponsor, said gun safety training could help prevent accidental shooting deaths when children come across a firearm.
"I'm a firm believer that education is the best form of prevention," he said."
