Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I hope this update finds all of you healthy and safe. We are going on 6 months of the new normal and it may sometimes feel like there is no end in sight. It is a little comforting to know that our nation has gone through similar times and survived to find new strengths and insights. In times like these, optimism is a necessity to get over the bumps in the road.
Think of the many conveniences that we now enjoy that the nation’s citizens didn’t have during the 1918 Influenza Pandemic. Quarantine is so much easier when we can order just about everything we need through a phone call or click of a button. We can have face-to-face conversations with friends and family without being in the same room. Medical advances have given us such a leg-up for fighting disease. Government programs provide for temporary assistance when people are in need of food, shelter, and healthcare.
In 1918, people relied on the kindness of their friends and neighbors and as much as I appreciate modern advances, kindness is needed in our society more than ever before.

Sports
The Utah High School Activities Association governing board confirmed plans to proceed with fall sports as scheduled. Read more here.
Schools
The Utah Department of Health, in collaboration with the Utah State Board of Education, created a manual that will help parents, teachers and schools open safely and stay open during the 2020-21 school year. Read the manual here.
Dr. Dunn
During Gov. Herbert’s weekly COVID-19 briefing, Dr. Angela Dunn answered a series of questions individuals around the state had about COVID-19. Watch here, starting at minute six and ending at minute 20.
Unemployment
The number of total new claims filed for unemployment benefits in Utah was 6,057 for the week of July 19 to July 25, 2020 with over $71 million of benefits paid. There were 83,716 continued claims filed during that same week. Traditional unemployment insurance claims decreased 17.11 percent from the previous week to 3,737 claims. Pandemic Unemployment Assistance claims decreased by 12.4 percent from the previous week to 1,307 claims. Pandemic Extended Unemployment Claims decreased by 4.5 percent from the last week to 1,013 claims. Read the full report here.
The job attachment status for active claimants will end effective August 15, 2020. Individuals whose employment has been impacted by COVID-19 should visit jobs.utah.gov/covid19 for updated information.
Tourism
