Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I hope that all of you are staying positive and doing what you can to keep you and your families healthy and safe. As you may have heard, Governor Herbert challenged Utahns to reduce transmission of the novel coronavirus by staying home when sick and wearing a mask in public whenever social distancing isn’t possible. As part of the challenge, the goal will be to reduce the average daily new cases to 500 by August 1st. He and Senate leadership want to stay away from mandates and work toward lowering cases while keeping the economy rolling. It is a tough ask, but I believe Utahns have what it takes to succeed.

Unemployment
Traditional unemployment insurance claims decreased 3.1 percent from the previous week to 4,850 claims. Pandemic Unemployment Assistance claims decreased by 10.6 percent from the previous week to 1,502 claims. Pandemic Extended Unemployment Claims increased by 6.2 percent from the previous week to 897 claims. The total new claims for all three programs ended the week at 7,249 and the combined weekly claims for all three programs was at 91,439. Read the report here.
Outdoor Recreation
This year, the Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation’s annual summit will feature in-person meetings and virtual sessions. It will be held at the Utah Valley Convention Center on August 25-26, and will be streamed electronically. More information here.
PPP
The Paycheck Protection Program is extended through August 8. The extension will make available the remaining $134 billion for small businesses and qualifying entities. Learn more here.
