Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Happy belated Mother’s Day to all the mothers who deserve much more gratitude than they receive. When times are stressful, it seems like the mothers of the world dig in and work harder to create normalcy and peace in their households.
I’m proud of the citizens of our state and the example they have set for the rest of the country. It hasn’t been perfect, but the state has done a good job of balancing health and economy. It is really easy for us all to criticize the decisions state leaders make from the comfort of our homes. The opinions of a small-business owner suffering under the lockdown may differ from the family of a Covid-19 patient. Both groups have legitimate concerns that need to be taken into account when making decisions that affect us all.

It is gratifying when experts outside of our state recognize Utah’s response to the pandemic. Harvard researchers recently determined that Utah is one of only nine states ready to begin safely opening restrictions. Read about that study here.

Orange Phase Clarifications
As reported last week, Governor Herbert issued an executive order moving the state to the “Moderate Risk” phase. He has since issued executive orders meant to clarify and expand on those orders. These clarifications pertain specifically to social gatherings, outdoor recreation, personal services, gyms, and fitness centers. For more information on the Governor’s clarifications, click here. The Pandemic and Mental Health
With all the ways that the pandemic has changed our lives, mental health has become increasingly important. Economic uncertainty, social isolation, and illness added to the stresses of everyday life can make even the most well-adjusted feel hopeless. KSL has compiled a list of resources to help us all maintain a positive mindset. Exercise, fresh air, hobbies, cleaning, and walking the dog can all help us clear our minds and break the monotony. Sometimes, we need more help and it can be difficult to admit to for most people. Professional help is phone or video call away and it can change your life. The University of Utah Neuropsychiatric Institute has a hotline at (801) 587-3000 for Utahns experiencing a mental health crisis. These specialists provide 24-hour crisis intervention, suicide prevention, information and referral, emotional support, and assistance to individuals experiencing emotional distress or psychiatric crisis.
High Risk Populations
The Public Health and Economic Emergency Commission announced its recommendations to protect those in Utah who are most vulnerable to COVID-19. As part of these recommendations, the Commission asked the governor to proceed with the Governor's Office of Management and Budget's plan to address high-risk populations. The Commission also adopted the "Protecting High-Risk Populations Project," a targeted plan to help those who are most vulnerable.
